MOBILE, Ala., January 27, 2010 — Alabama Power and the Mobile Chapter of the Alabama Power Service Organization (APSO) have agreed to collect monetary donations for the American Red Cross International Response Fund at their business offices in southwest Alabama. (See list below.)  The International Response Fund enables the Red Cross and its international entities to deliver disaster relief services when and where they are needed.  The public may donate money at these locations beginning today through February 26, 2010.

“We are terribly saddened by the loss of life and destruction in Haiti. Making our offices available as a collection point for the Red Cross should make it more convenient for the public to make a contribution to the ‘Haiti Relief’ effort,” said Palmer Gatlin, president, Mobile Chapter, Alabama Power Service Organization.  “Additionally, we are making an appeal to our employees to support this effort.”

“The generous contributions and support of corporate partners like Alabama Power are critical to the ability of the American Red Cross to provide help and hope for the people of Haiti during their time of need,” said Leisle Mims, Chapter Executive Director of the American Red Cross Alabama Gulf Coast Chapter.

Companies large and small, representing industries across the United States, have taken action to support their neighbors in Haiti by donating millions of dollars to the American Red Cross and by encouraging their customers and employees to follow suit. This support is making it into the hands of survivors and enabling more help to be on the way.

You can help the victims of countless crises, like the recent earthquake in Haiti, around the world each year by making a financial gift to the American Red Cross International Response Fund, which will provide immediate relief and long-term support through supplies, technical assistance and other support to help those in need. The American Red Cross honors donor intent.

If you wish to designate your donation to a specific disaster, please do so at the time of your donation by mailing your donation with the designation to the American Red Cross, P.O. Box 37243, Washington, D.C. 20013 or to American Red Cross Alabama Gulf Coast Chapter, P.O. Box 1764, Mobile, AL 36633. Donations to the International Response Fund can be made by phone at 1-800-REDCROSS or 1-800-257-7575 (Spanish) or online at www.redcross.org.
